The manuscripts that preserve his compositions date from the middle of the 15th century. In 1418 he was named among the chaplains of the church of St Merri in Paris, and in 1421 he was listed in a register of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris as a clerk of matins (singer) in the cathedral. This latter source reveals that he was a priest and originally from the diocese of Sens.\nGrossin seems to have written mostly sacred works. Foremost among these is a four-movement setting of the Ordinary of the Mass (the Agnus is lacking) that is unified by a 'trumpetta' part in each of the movements. Whether the designation 'trumpetta' means that this line is to be played on a slide trumpet or to be sung in the manner of a trumpet is not certain. In each of the four movements of the mass, vocal duets supported by the 'trumpetta' alternate with sections for full chorus. Besides this unified mass, there are also polyphonic settings of individual items of the Ordinary. Of these the Kyrie carries the inscription 'faulx bourdon' next to the tenor, indicating that a third voice is to be added. The second of the two Glorias, as it is found in I-TRmp 87, concludes with a vocal flourish in the top voice that is not present in the other three surviving versions of the piece. The additional melisma may be a passage of vocal coloratura added by a performer. Grossin's two French chansons include a rondeau, \nVa t'ent, souspier, and a through-composed piece, Tres douchement et soutiement. Of his two extant motets, only one, the song-motet Imera dat hodierno, is preserved complete; it survives today in at least six sources and was evidently one of his most popular compositions. All his works seem likely to have been written before about 1430.\nWORKS\nEdition: \nEarly Fifteenth-Century Music, ed. G. French singer and composer. He was probably from the archdiocese of Sens in Haute-Bourgogne. His works appear in 15th-century musical sources under the name Benoit, but an authoritative papal document identifies him as Benedictus Sirede. He is first documented in 1436--7, as a singer for the confraternity of Orsanmichele in Florence. In 1438 he was recruited in Ferrara by Lorenzo de' Medici for the cathedral and baptistry choir of Florence, becoming choirmaster in 1439. He resigned from this position on 23 January 1448. From 1448 to 1450 he served in the chapel of Leonello d'Este in Ferrara; he was also a member of the papal chapel from December 1447 to February 1448, and again from January 1451 to October 1455. \nSix works by Benoit survive, probably composed in the 1430s and 40s. All are in manuscripts copied in northern Italy during this period: I-Bc Q15, MOe a.X.1.11, Vnm 7554 (olim 145) and GB-Ob Can. misc.213. The isorhythmic motet Gaude tu baptista Christi and the antiphon Puer qui natus est nobis are in honour of St John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, and may have been composed there. The hymns and antiphons closely resemble those by Du Fay from the same period. The chanson has been attributed by some scholars, on slender grounds, to a Guillaume Benoit who was choirmaster at Notre Dame in 1405 and possibly also a servant of the Duke of Suffolk between 1423 and 1427.\nWORKS Edition: Early Fifteenth-Century Music, ed. Franco-Flemish composer. All his music first appears in sources copied in the years 1425 to 1435 and none of it suggests a style any earlier than 1415; so he must surely be the 'Joh. Franciscus de Gemblaco' documented as a succentor at the collegiate church of St Martin, Liege, by September 1417 and in 1419--20 (as carefully argued in Quitin, later fully supported by Igoe and Strohm). The widely held view that he was the Burgundian court singer Johannes Franchois, documented from 1378 to 1415 (see Wright) and born no later than 1355, must be considered thoroughly implausible; since that man was a canon of Evreux from 1394 he cannot be the humble succentor of 1417--20. The name 'de Gemblaco' is extremely common in Liege, and the composer may therefore have been born there rather than at Gembloux (which is in the diocese of Liege, though nearer to Brussels). Many details in his music suggest the influence of other composers from Liege, particulary Hugo de Lantins and Johannes Ciconia. Given the wide distribution of his music in Italian sources, it is likely that he later moved south, as is implied, in fact, in the text of his Sans oublyer.\nThe name 'Jo franchois de gemblaco' appears only twice in the musical sources, in I-Bc Q15 for two Gloria settings; otherwise his works are ascribed 'Jo Franchois' or 'Jo Gemblaco', but their stylistic consistency makes it fairly certain that all the music is by a single composer. That style is moreover clear enough to make it easy to agree with Feininger that the anonymous Gloria--Credo pair is indeed by the same man. More than any other composer of his generation he explored systematic imitation, often using several different pitches for successive entries; in this he seems to have followed and expanded on the lead of Hugo de Lantins. He made considerable use of motivic and sequential treatment as well as of detailed expressivity in text setting, both perhaps expanding on the initiatives of Johannes Ciconia. His five-voice motet Ave virgo lux Maria is notable for its famous textless introit with two canonic voices over a wide-range 'trumpetta', for having its cantus firmus (the antiphon Sancta Maria succurre miseris; see LU, 1255) not in the tenor but in the contratenor, and for its extensive unison imitation between the upper voices; in this last respect it seems again to expand techniques pioneered by Ciconia.\nWORKS\nmass pairs: Gloria and Credo, 3vv, ed. C. van den Borren, Polyphonia sacra (Burnham, Bucks., 1932, 2/1963), 93 (paired in I-Bc Q15 and by implication in AO; the jaunty 'Amen' section of the Credo presented there as an appendix appears in all full sources apart from GB-Ob 213) \nGloria and Credo, 3vv, ed. in Igoe, 21 (paired in I-AO and Bc Q15, though there is some dispute as to whether they really belong together: they have the same tonality and style, but the Gloria is considerably more condensed -- called 'brevior' in the index to AO -- and the Credo tenor carries the melody Alma redemptoris mater, though the Gloria tenor has a similar manner) \nGloria and Credo, 3vv (anon. but plausibly attrib. to Franchois de Gemblaco and ed. in Feininger, Bc Q15, ff. 103v--106) \nmotets: Ave virgo lux Maria/Sancta Maria, 5vv with alternative 4vv version, ed. in Igoe, 32, and DTO, lxxvi, Jg. xl/19 \nrondeaux\nall edited in van den Borren, 1950\nMon seul voloir mon souverain retour, 3vv \nPar ung regart des deux biaulx yeux riant, 3vv \nSans oublyer sans faire departye, 3vv (also in the Buxheim Keyboard Manuscript, ed.
