French singer and composer. He was a priest, and appears as a singer in the Burgundian chapel between 1415 and 1419. He was in the Papal Chapel from 1422 to 1425. In 1422 he received a canonry in Notre Dame in Ligny and also became rector of St Willibrodus, near Antwerp. He later held ecclesiastical offices in Beauvais, Picquigny and possibly Rouen. By 1430 he may again have been active at the Burgundian court since his name appears in the list of singers in Binchois' motet Nove cantum melodie, composed in Burgundy in that year. His name is found in the lists of singers from 1434 to 1464. He died in Brussels and was interred in Ste Gudule. His motto 'Fais tout ce que tu vouldras/Avoir faist quand tu mourras' served as his epitaph. He was paid wages of 6 escus a month from December 1450 to October 1454 (35-7, 39,43-5,49,119-20, 122, 126,129, 133, 139, 142). In addi tion he received 10 escus for robes for October 1450 (34), May 1451 (38), October 1451 (40), May 1452 (46), October 1452 (50), winter 1453 (153) and May 1454 (159), and for a mourning robe in April 1453 on the death of Isabelle. Barbier was also paid 16 escus for a robe de migraine in November 1451 (61), while in May 1453 (along with the other singers) he received 10 escus for a horse to travel with Ren? from Anjou to Provence (172). He was paid 2 reauz for coming from Picardy to join the chapel (35), although elsewhere he was termed an Angevin singer (d'Agnel, 3389: B2479, f. 59v).\n\np. 83\nHenry Charretier 33 Charretier was paid 2 escus for going to Brittany to bring back singers for the chapel (33). This payment is not dated but it is included with the wages for August, September and October 1450. It is likely, therefore, that the journey was made during, or very shortly before, this period: Pierres Barbier and Guillot Guillemart were paid for the first time in October 1450 and Charretier may have been collecting them.\n\nMail privé Jean-Michel Matz 8 avril 2011 :\nJe ne vais pas vous être d'une grande utilité. De Porta.\n• Planchart : Jehan Villain: was a small vicar from 30 May 1455 to 23 June 1457 and from 24 June 1458 to 27 October 1465, when he became a grand vicar on the resignation of Jacques Morel [LAN, 4G 7454, 5v; 4G 7455, 6v; 4G 7457, 8r; 4G 7464, 5v; CBM 1060, 226v]. Villain’s absence for all of 1457-58 might be a mirage, the list for that year reports as a small vicar one Quienran, a name found in no other document from Cambrai known to me, who served the entire fiscal year. I believe that this is a sobriquet for Villain. He probably joined the grand community of chaplains in 1444-45 (one of the years where the advents are not recorded) and appears in the lists from 1445-46 [LAN, 4G 6912, 11v] to 1452-53 [LAN, 4G 6918, 22r]. In 1470-71 he held the chaplaincy of the 11,000 Virgins as a foreign chaplaincy but the following year he is recorded as the past holder [LAN, 4G 7943, 37r; 4G 7944, 39r]. He probably shifted to the small community of chaplains because on 25 October 1465 he resigned the chaplaincy of St. John Baptist to Henri Macheclier in preparation to his becoming a grand vicar [CBM 1060, 226v]. He probably died in 1471-72, and his passing would have been recorded in the lost register N of the acts.\n\n• Il ne semble pas pouvoir être : PillebouePCR: Sainte-chapelle de Bourges: Jean Villain* (Villani), clerc 13.10.1459 sera privé des vêtement comme Jean d’Aubigny s’ils continuent à se battre. He is probably a son of Jacques le Mannier, though perhaps not the child whose birth so scandalized the chapter on 28 June 1454 [CBM 1059, 96v]. On 24 August 1477 he collated the chaplaincy of St. Andrew on the death of Baudouin Cauwet, and that same day he exchanged it for the chaplaincy of All Saints with Pierre Hochart [CBM 1061, 31r]. On 19 June 1481 he collated the chaplaincy of St. James on the death of Symon Gossart and resigned the chaplaincy of All Saints to Gilles Cosse, the future papal singer, then a chorister [CBM 1061, 103v]. On 17 September 1481 he was officially dispensed from bastardy and granted the grand vicariate vacated by the death of Symon Mellet and resigned the chaplaincy of St. James to Jehan Cornuel [CBM 1061, 133r]. On 13 December 1495 he was granted a licentia testandi [CBM 1063, 70r] and he died on 04 January 1496 (his will was read on 05 January) [CBM 1063, 75r]. On 07 January 1496 a chaplaincy of St. Nicholas in the parish church of Carnières, which he had held, was collated to Jehan Herondart, a chorister, and his grand vicariate went to Raoul de Molinbel (Molenberg) [CBM 1063, 76r]. His advent in the grand community of chaplains is recorded in 1481-82, but he appears on the lists only for the following year [LAN, 4G 6959, 12v; 4G 6961, 31v], suggesting he changed over to the small community. He was a relative of Thomas Bloquel, cantor and grand minister, who on 19 July 1493 complained that Charles was still paid only as a semi vicar, but the canons replied that he was inconsistent and lazy and kept him at half stipend [CBM 1062, 79r]. On 28 August 1499 he collated the chaplaincy of St. Elizabeth on the resignation of Jehan Rogier, canon of Ste. Croix [CBM 1064, 205r], but problems arose and he was not confirmed to it until 25 October [CBM 1064, 217v]. He joined the grand community of chaplains in 1500-01 [LAN, 6985, 15v] (check). On 05 July 1501 he was granted the chaplaincy of St. Christopher, resigned by Jacques Canobes [CBM 1064, 329v] and on 12 September 1502 he was made a grand vicar upon the death of Jehan de la Porte, and that same day he resigned the chaplaincy of St. Christopher, which went to Vincent Tonober [CBM 403r]. check later life"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"36"},["name","Bibliography"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"8158"},["text","Planchart PCR"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. This last is not Serafino dall'Aquila, the eminent poet-musician and familiar of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, because he was in Milan with Sforza in 1487. But he could be one of the few Italian composers of church Polyphony in the latter Quattrocento, with two possible works: a structurally unorthodox Credo by Seraphinus in Per431, a Neapolitan manuscript from the 1480s; and a lauda by Seraphinus Baldesaris in Petrucci's Laude libro II (1508). Moreover, the usual allotment of St. Peter's clerics included several who sang polyphony, judging both by their salaries and indications that they sang something other than soprano: Hieronymus Johannes de Pazillis (contra) and Jacobus Antonius (tenor, and from 1490 also contrabasso) - p.309: (Serafinus: 9/1485-2/1489.
