Le 2 septembre, fut malade en danger de peste la tante de M. Regnaut, maistre des enfans (1), laquelle se céloit et n'osoit se découvrir, dont advint que le plus grand des enfants de chœur fut atteint et frappé de ladicte maladie : on remédia aussitost faire retirer le reste des enfans, lesquels furent envoyés avec le maistre en une maison de louage au faubourg Sainct-Nicolas, et demeura ladicte tante et ledict enfant, nommé Jean Pignorey, en la maistrise, lesquels on fit soigner au mieux qu'on put. Les aultres enfans et le maistre partant de ladicte maison furent revestus tous à neuf et dépouillés de tous leurs habits ; laissé le tout en ladicte maistrise pour les nettoyer et esventer. Ledict Jean Pignorey mourut le 6, et fut enterré au préau du cloistre. Bénigne de Requeleyne, maire de Dijon, frappé d'une apoplexie, à ce qu'on tient, car il estoit en bonne santé environ les trois ou quatre heures après midi, où il fut mandé d'aller parlementer quelques affaires avec M. de Parequon (1), capitaine du chasteau, et M. le baron de Lux, gouverneur pour le Roy au duché. Advint qu'au retour du chasteau ledict maire, estant en son logis, se mit au lit, et rendit l'âme environ les six heures du soir. Il ne remplit sa fonction que 2 ans puisqu’il se retira le 19.3.1506 pour un voyage en Terre Sainte dont il a laissé un récit complet. Il avait lui-même désigné au chapitre pour le remplacer un choriste de la chapelle royale nommé Mathurin Dubuisson. Il devait continuer plus tard de s’intéresser aux enfants de la maîtrise, qu’il reçut plusieurs fois dans sa maison de campagne. En 1519 (délibérations capitulaires en 1515 et le 19.8.1519), il fit don à la cathédrale d’un orgue magnifique placé sur le jubé (Collette & Bourdon 1892, p. 113-114). Quant au troisième, un in-folio sur vélin, détenu en 1776- par un négociant d'Amster dam, PierrenAntoine Crevenna, et signalé par R. Rôbricht dans sa Bibliotheca geographica Palestinae 4, il fut vendu chez Sotheby, le 6 décembre 1937, à M. Sawyer, un libraire londonien!5. Pierre II Mésenge. Si bavard soit-il et (grâces lui en soient rendues î le narrateur se montre fort discret sur lui-même et sur sa famille. Pourtant, les archives ne sont muettes ni sur son oncle, ni sur lui-même. L'oncle, le chanoine Pierre Ier Mésenge, était trésorier de l'archevêque de Rouen6, Georges I" d'Amboise (1494-1510), le ministre de Louis XII. Le 4 novembre 1499, alors qu'on s'apprêtait à arrêter, à l'hôtellerie rouennaise du Dieu d'Amour, des voyageurs dont la langue et l'allure semblaient bizarres, Mésenge reconnut dans l'un des suspects le cardinal Jean de Médicis, le futur Léon X, qui voyageait incognito. Grâce à la perspicacité du chanoine, l'éminence séjourna tranquillement à Rouen jusqu'au 11 décembre 1499. Pierre I" Mésenge était mort en 1505, non sans avoir pourvu fort convenablement son neveu et homonyme, notre pèlerin. Celui- ci, en 1502, avait été gratifié de la cure de Nécy, près de Trun, au diocèse de Sées. Ce bénéfice en effet était à la présentation du chapitre de Notre-Dame de Rouen et rapportait trois cents livres à son titulaire 7. Celui-ci, comme beaucoup de clercs de cette époque, préférait sans doute à ses ouailles sa stalle de la cathédrale de Rouen. Après la mort de son oncle et son voyage en Palestine, Pierre II Mésenge devint l'un des membres les plus importants du chapitre. Le 18 juin 1509, l'architecte Rouland Le Roux jetait les fondations du portail central à la façade ouest de la cathédrale. Or, en 1511-1512, sous Georges II d'Amboise, lorsqu'on décida d'orner le tympan d'un arbre de Jessé, les chanoines Mésenge et Sandouville furent chargés par leurs confrères de la surveillance des travaux8. Et quand l'architecte résolut de décorer de vingt statues de prélats les ébrasements du portail, notre Mésenge, aussi généreux que bien pourvu d'écus, offrit personnellement une statue d'archevêque*. Il devait trépasser en 1621. Durant leur interminable séjour à Venise, Mésenge et ses amis n'eurent pas le loisir de flâner paresseusement. Dévots pèlerins, ils se firent un devoir d'assister à plusieurs offices en la basilique Saint-Marc. Ils durent aussi parlementer longtemps avec le patron Cf. Jouen et Fuzel, Comptes, devis et inventaires du Manoir archiépiscopal de Rouen, Paris et Rouen, 1908. On trouvera une notice sur Pierre I" Mésenge à la p. 393. Dans ce document, Guillaume de Gilley donne procuration à un apothicaire parisien afin d’obtenir de Bénigne Serre, receveur général de Languedoïl, le paiement d’une partie de ses gages du quartier de juillet à septembre 1531 et de ceux du quartier suivant, d’octobre à décembre 1531. Peut-être fut-il à ce moment contraint de quitter provisoirement Paris et la chapelle royale, puisqu’il ne put recevoir en personne les sommes qui lui étaient dues. En 1533, le compte de la Chapelle de musique révèle que Guillaume de Gilley fut « de nouvel receu chantre en lad. Chapelle », ce qui étaye cette hypothèse ; à cette occasion le roi lui versait 75 L. t. de gages correspondant au mois d’octobre à décembre 1533. Gilley disparaît des documents royaux après 1533. Elzear Genet alias Carpentras Carpentras can be connected with the chapel of Louis XII not through documents, but through his own admission; in the dedication to Cardinal Ippolito de' Medici of the print of his Liber Hymnorum (1532), he stated that he had been recalled to Rome from the French court by Leo X at the beginning of his pontificate. It is now possible to give an idea of the dates of his service to the king. Genet had been a member of the papal chapel at least since 1508, but on 21 May, 1512, he announced his intention of leaving Rome and asked permission to keep the privileges of the papal singers while he was away; presumably, he joined the French royal chapel soon after.29 Nor was he recalled immediately to Rome on the accession of Leo X. The radical idea of making a composer (Genet) the Master of the papal chapel did not occur immedi- 67 ately to the pope, who on 6 April, 1513, gave the position to the Archbishop of Durazzo, the former sacristan of the chapel.3? Genet was in Rome soon after, however, and was made Master of the papal chapel on 5 November, 1513.31 Antoine de Longueval Longueval had moved from Ferrara to the royal chapel around 1507.32 He was one of a number of singers in the chapel of Francois I granted benefices and favors by Leo X.33 RS 1340, fol. 67r: supplication dated 2 March, 1510. He has the necessary dis- pensation, and asks for a new provision to the benefices. The income of each of the benefices was not expected to exceed 24 ducats. Nicasius de Villin RS 1337, fol. 136r: supplication dated 5 February, 1510. Villin, described as a canon of the church of Notre Dame de Cleriaco "nullius diocesis," and as a singer in the king's chapel,44 asks for a dispensation extending permission to hold incompatible benefices to three. Chapel of Anne de Bretagne Antoine Divitis, Master of the Chapel* That Divitis was the Master of Anne's chapel in 15 l is perhaps the most interesting information provided by these documents, but it causes problems. For in the very month that he is so named 70 in the document cited below, Jean Mouton is also called Master of the Queen's chapel in a chapter act of St-Andre of Grenoble.45 Perhaps the Vatican document is mistaken or Mouton and Divitis shared the position of Master. In any case, Divitis probably moved to Anne's employ shortly after the disbanding of the chapel of Philip the Fair in 1506. RS 1345, fols. 2ir- 2 v: supplication dated 2 May, 1510. Robert Challand [Britto, Guibe], Cardinal of Nantes, [also known by his titular church of St. Anastasia], had obtained in commendam the priory of St-Jacques de Premul of the Benedictine Order, outside the walls of Nantes, but now asks to cede it to Divitis, described as cleric of Liege and singer and Master of the queen's chapel.46 The income was said not to exceed 200 ducats and the cardinal is given the right of regression. Jean de Hollewigue alias Mouton, Master of the Chapel* Mouton is named as a singer in Anne's chapel on 22 April, 1509, and is called Master of the Chapel in a document of 1510 (see Divitis above), but it is likely that he joined Anne's chapel around 1501-02.48 He was also one of a number of singers in the chapel of François I granted benefices and favors by Leo X.49 RS 1312, fol. 21 or: supplication dated 14 February, 1509. Mouton, described as a cleric of the diocese of Therouanne [and not as a singer in any royal 71 chapel], asks for a new provision to the parish church of Tolay, vacant on the death of Egide de Quibriac and given to Mouton by Cardinal Robert Challand. Mouton, de- scribed as a cleric of the diocese of Therouanne [and not as a singer in any royal chapel],50 asks for a dispensation to allow him to hold three incompatible benefices. THE JOURNAL OF MUSICOLOGY Egide Charpentier Most of Charpentier's career was spent as a singer in the papal chapel; he first appears in a chapel list of June 1508.52 In Feb- ruary of 1510, he announced his intention of leaving Rome and was granted permission to keep the privileges of a singer in the chapel.53 He returned to the papal chapel in August, 1514.54 The relatively large number of documents presented here may be the result of the experi- ence he gained as a hunter of benefices while a papal singer. And at least one of them contains a subterfuge related to his former employment. In January, 1514, Charpentier made a permutation of benefices with the papal singer Johannes Radulphi, and the original supplication (pre- sented below) and the actual bull listed by Frey (along with many others of 1513) state that Charpentier was also a member of the papal chapel, thus suggesting that he returned to Rome in 1513.55 Yet this seems to be contradicted by a motu proprio which states that Charpentier actually re- joined the chapel in August, 1514.56 The conflict is resolved by a suppli- cation dated 24 February, 1514, in which Charpentier specifically asks to be considered as a papal singer in the bull of 30 January, 1514 (and 72 therefore as a recipient of their special privileges), even though he was not in fact in Rome or a member of the chapel when the bull was promulgated (see below); this legal subterfuge probably applies to the bulls of 1513 as well. He most likely remained in the queen's chapel until her death in January, 1514, and then made his way back to Rome. RS 1388, fol. 298v: supplication dated 22January, 1512. The incomes of these benefices were not expected to exceed 1 oo ducats. RS 1445,fols. g6v- 97r: supplication dated 24 February, 1514. In the bull allowing the above permutation, Charpentier had been described as a papal singer even though he was not in fact in Rome or a member of the papal house- hold. 62 Because he is worried that this fact may cause him legal problems with the permutation, he asksfor an indult whereby the bull will be read as if he really were a member of the chapel at that time. Fresne, described as a cleric of the diocese of Cambrai and as a singer in the queen's chapel,63 asks for a dispensation allowing him to hold two incompatible benefices. 74 Noel Galoys Galoys was one of the singers of the chapel of Fran- ?ois I receiving benefices and favors from Leo X in 1515.64 RS 1436,fols. 154v-15r r: supplication dated 21 December, 1513. Galoys and Robert Presel, both identified as singers in the queen's chapel, 65 have engaged in a lawsuit concerning a canonry and prebend in the church of St-Gervais de Viromanda in the diocese of Noyon. They have come to an agreement whereby Presel cedes his rights to Jean Le Myre, Galoys cedes the benefice to Le Myre, and Le Myre pays a pension of 40 livres tournois "monete currente in francia" to Galoys. Lupi, described as the rector of the parish church of Abaratz in the diocese of Nantes [and not de- scribed as a singer in any royal chapel],71 has resigned the benefice. Franciscus [Hamon], Bishop-elect of Nantes asks for the benefice. The income was not ex- pected to exceed i oo ducats. Jean Maupin* Maupin had previously been in the king's chapel and was a member of the chapel of the Duke of Ferrara in 1506 and 1508.72 RS 1347, fol. 27v: supplication dated 6June, 151 o. Maupin, described as rector of the parish church of Novonico in the diocese ofA utun and a singer in the queen's chapel,73 asks for a dispensation to allow him to hold three incompatible benefices. While it has long been known that she had a private chapel, and that Mouton was one of her singers,91 it had not been known (as these supplications show) that the Queen employed others of the rising generation of French composers; in fact she employed almost all of them (Mouton, Divitis, Richafort, and Sermizy), or that she had such a large chapel (16 people can be identified as her chapel singers in the years 1510-14; in 1515, the king's chapel numbered 22, and this presumably represented a merger of the two royal chapels). Anne's chapel might have been formed as an expression of her special devotion to religion and love of music; more likely she maintained one more as part of her dignity as the reigning Duchess of Brittany than as Queen of France. On coupa, trancha, supprima tout ce qui ne convenoit pas à leurs nouveaux principes d'accords, en rendant cahoteux ce qui auparavant étoit doux; on introduisit donc alors une 189 barbarie et une disette étonnante, capables d'inspirer du mépris pour le plain-chant (1). Mais ce qui dut consoler les personnes zélées pour le chant grégorien et les autres chants anciens, est que , dans le temps même de ces entreprises, un chanoine commensal de notre évêque et son économe, inventa une machine capable de donner un nouveau mérite au chant grégorien. Ce chanoine, nommé Edme Guillaume, trouva le secret de tourner un cornet en forme de serpent, vers l'an 1590(a). On s'en servit pour les concerts qu'on exécuta chez lui, et cet instrument ayant été perfectionné est devenu commun dans les grandes églises. Amyot, qui témoigna toujours de l'inclination pour la musique, en eut besoin plus que jamais, pour chasser la mélancolie qui s'empara de lui, depuis son retour des Etats de Blois, et surtout depuis l'an 1591, qu'il ne fut plus grand-aumônier, ne pouvant pas même, en ce temps-là, aller se délasserà Régennes, parce que ce château étoit rempli d'une garnison, sous la conduite d'un chanoine que le Chapitre y commettoit (2). Quoique son corps fût fait au froid et au chaud, et qu'il fût d'une bonne constitution, il se trouva enfin attaqué d'une fièvre lente qui lui dessécha les poumons. Sentant sa fin approcher, il eut recours aux sacrements de l'Eglise, et les ayant tous reçus , il mourut le 6 février 1593, dans sa quatre-vingtième année. La vacance du siége épiscopal d'Auxerre, qui commença le 20 15701 1593. février 1570, et qui dura un peu plus d'un an, ne changea presque rien (a). Le Chapitre continua les pouvoirs de vicaire général à Gaspard Damy, qui l'avoit déjà été sous trois évêques d'Auxerre consécutivement, sauf les protestations que le doyen et l'archidiacre firent pouf la conservation de leurs droits (2). La seule innovation a laquelle cette vacance donna occasion, est, que le Chapitre qui avoit toujours nommé et conféré en corps les bénéfices pendant les vacances du siége, statua, le 10 février 1571, que chaque chanoine nommeroit ou présenteroit à son tour par semaine, en commençant par le doyen, usa. jusqu'à ce que le siége épUcopal fût rempli, et qu'à la vacance suivante on reprendroit le tour où l'on en seroit resté. Mais cette conclusion ne put avoir lieu cette fois-là, puisque dès le commencement du mois de mars, Jacques Amyot, successeur du cardinal de la Bourdaisière , prit possession de l'évêché par procureur. Plusieurs historiens ont écrit certaines particularités de la vie de Jacques Amyot sur des ouï-dire, et sans avoir devant les yeux des mémoires fidèles. Tels sont Varillas, Brantôme, Saint-Réal, et même M. de Thou. Comme ils ont été déjà réfutés par un critique célèbre (1), on trouvera bon que je me dispense de rapporter les circonstances qu'ils ont marquées de sa jeunesse, sans cependant passer sous silence ce que j'ai appris par les écrits de ceux qui ont souvent parlé à ses amis les plus intimes, et auxquels il ne cachoit rien, quand l'occasion se présentoit de dévoiler ses plus grands secrets. On ne peut mieux être informé des commencements de sa vie, que par le mémoire qu'il en dressa lui-même, et qu'il confia à Renaud Martin, l'un de ses commensaux, pour l'achever après sa mort. Il étudia la poésie sous Jacques de Tusan, professeur ropl, l'éloquence et la philosophie sous Pierre Danès (1), et les mathématiques sous Oronce Finée, tous trois professeurs royaux établis nouvellement par François Ier. S'étant fait passer maître ès-arts a dix-neuf ans (2). il alla à Bourges pour y étudier le droit civil avec un jeune homme qui fut depuis célèbre avocat en parlement (3). Il fut fait chanoine en 1555, reprit pour la seconde fois le gouvernement des enfants, l'année suivante restant chanoine. Après la mort du précédent, il fut pourvu de la sous-chantrerie par le vicaire-général du cardinal de la Bourdaisièrc. C'étoitlui qui, deux ans auparavant, avoit obtenu du Chapitre d'Auxerre (2) un morceau de la relique qu'on appeloit le manteau de saint Martin, pour l'église de Saint-Martin-d'Olivet, proche Orléans, où il avoit été baptisé. Il mourut sous-chantre, le 16 juillet 1573, et fut inhumé devant la chapelle de Saint-Martin. This is a work of exceptional mensural complexity and repeated harsh dissonances in the upper voices, optimistically described by Van den Borren as giving ‘some idea of improvised counterpoint, as it was practised in the fifteenth century’. The top voice has as its text one of the best-known glosses (Chevalier no.18318) on the antiphon used in the tenor. Given the manuscript context and the style of the work, Billart may well be identifiable with Aubert Billard (Albertus Billardi), a clerk and chaplain at Notre Dame, Paris, from 1392 to 1394.
